This Weekend...

Gwen + Endion: Engagement Party

Check out these images from the engagement party of one of my fabulous 2010 couples, Gwen and Endion! Held at Kan Zaman, a vibrant Northeast Ohio Middle Eastern restaurant, there was good food, music, and even a belly dancer as entertainment.

Savvy did decor and provided some personalized elements including a 'couple's quiz' that was at each table setting, and mini white zin wine favors with custom hang tags. We also did some pretty and cost-effective decor using candles, candle sticks and...fuschia, silver and gold christmas ornaments!! The entire vibe totally reflected the couple--who are so fun! Look for their summer wedding next year, and enjoy!

Kmart Flower Girls!

I didn't even know Kmart still existed until a sales associate at Children's Place suggested I look there for tights for my 4-month-old's Halloween costume! And wow was I surprised by the super cute selection of clothing there for little girls! Now, maybe this isn't every Kmart, but the one in my neighborhood is amazing! It led me to further investigate online, and my first thought was confirmed: this is an AWESOME place to look for flower girl dresses with big style on a dime. ESPECIALLY now, around the holidays. Giving Props Where Props are Due: thinking creatively about e-pics

Now, I am no professional photographer. But I do look at wayyy more than my fair share of wedding and wedding-related photography to have made a few observations worthy of sharing. My first observation concerns the increasingly popular engagement photo sessions.
Nearly all wedding photographers offer these pre-wedding sessions as part of or add-ons to wedding packages. They're a great chance to spend an hour or two getting to know who will be your wedding photographer and of course, to get some nice images of you and fiance before the wedding.
But way too many of the engagement photos I see are...well...so boring!
Before doing engagement photos, think about you and your significant other and what represents you as a couple? What are some of favorite things, places? What are your hobbies or other interests you share?
Once you have a list, think creatively about how you can convey those things through your photos.
Try to go beyond simply thinking about what you're going to wear and resist the urge to have your photos taken in the common, typical and frequented so-called "picturesque" locations in your city. Think beyond the park and have photos taken somewhere off the beaten path or somewhere that reflects you.
An urban, city girl? Take your photos downtown and play off of the endless possibilities that cities present. A country girl? Try a local farm. Kids at heart? Hit up a local carnival or amusement park. A locavore or foodie? Why not the Saturday morning Farmer's Market? An artist or creative type? Do something hands on and have your photographer capture you as a "fly-on-the-wall."
Another idea is to think about props. Yes, this sounds corny, but really, a few fun props can take your photo session from nice to amazing! Check out some recent examples from engagement sessions that I LOVE. Hopefully it inspires you!

So I did a brief preview of this wedding a month or so ago. Now, check out some professional pics by Terry Goodman of Northeast Ohio's Platinum Photography. Highlights of this wedding:

1. the time of day: beautiful, brunch-time outdoor ceremony. know me and know I live for brunch! and weddings at this time of day are super savvy when it comes to saving $$

2. the 'sparklie' backdrop for the ceremony

3. the bride's super stylish cake by michael angelo's bakery and chocolatier (yes yes yes a cake can be stylish!)

note: i love how this bakery does not charge by the slice and has flat fees for their cakes based on how many a given style will feed. and prices are incredibly reasonable for the quality. plus, they do strawberry cassatta and a host of other desserts, so.....yeah! see their 2009 catalog here.

4. the entertainment: guests had three different experiences: a harpist that was perfectly-suited for the ceremony; a pianist for the mimosa-hour; and a dj for brunch and dancing:)

Lulu's Splendor...

I had to share with you a most fabulous Etsy shop, Lulu's Splendor which sells some of the most gorgeous and reasonably priced occasions jewelry I've seen. Carla's pieces are fantastic, one of a kind and have SO much personality. And not only are they hand made--she will adapt a piece just for you based on what you need. Although her pieces are certainly geared most toward weddings or special occasions (she does a lot of work for brides/bridesmaids orders)--I HAD to have one of her bracelets and find that pairing it with just jeans and a tank works out very well for an unexpected touch of glam every day. Nearly a year of planning came to life on August 29th for Jess and Larry's downtown Cleveland wedding. Jess was a dream bride for me to plan for: a fashionista, open to ideas and super sweet! I'm going to miss our weekly emails:(

The wedding ceremony and reception were at the Wyndham at Playhouse Square, and in addition to a gawgeous day (if you know Cleveland, you know the weather is normally sketchy) all of the wedding details came together perfectly and beautifully. :highlights of this wedding:

1. the candy bar: i am so not into candy bars---usually. i just don't feel they are the best choice for weddings. BUT, this one was well done. classy. elegant. if i do say so myself:)

2. use of candlelight: this wedding was done in a very soft, romantic palette of whites/creams/champagne. and the use of hundreds of varying candles in the space made everything dreamy.

jess and larry were engaged at a vineyard, so we subtly incorporated wine related elements, like here with the wine bottles that served as guest book

my favorite detail of the day. this was the first thing guests saw when entering the space. first impressions are everything.

this table was phenomenal. instead of the typical bridal party "head table" where brides and grooms separate themselves from their guests, we opted to seat Jess, Larry their party AND their party members' guests at one long table smack in the center of the room. It was nice that they were in the middle of the action and surrounded by their loved ones instead of set apart; and bridal party members and dates were very grateful to be able to sit together:)

So Khia and Chuk had a seriously awesome wedding this past Saturday. Like, seriously. With an all-star vendor line-up, this couple's impeccable taste really shined through in their romantic 'chocolate & cherry'-dubbed wedding.I am almost ashamed to be posting photos from my lowly point-and-shoot camera when rock star photographer Fred Egan out of Dallas, TX was there documenting the event...but here goes!

we had this seating map made by an amazing etsy vendor to help the bride's 250 guests find their seats. we coupled this with placecards.

Brunch-time, Sunday garden wedding. I styled this wedding for the bride being given only her color scheme which included pinks, purples and platinum grey. Please note,these are photos I took (when I had time!) and I will do a full recap of this wedding with professional photos and vendor run down soon:)

For this brunch-time wedding, I really wanted to capture the time of the day and built everything around that. From the floral to the sparklies that provided a backdrop from the pergola, to the incorporation of airy branches-- everything about this wedding was light/airy and fresh. Instead of a full bar, we provided mimosas for cocktails--a brunch staple.

Even though this was an early afternoon event, the couple still wanted to have a PARTY...so we accomplished that with low lighting and mood lighting in the reception space. More pics to come.

Thanks Shamika and Carl for allowing me to be a part of your day and bring your vision to life! Have a great time in Mexico!

Tidbit: Make an Exit

And make it memorable!
I can't stress this enough to my couples.
Remember learning how to write a 5 paragraph essay in 5th grade where you always had to have an introduction, body and close to wrap it all up? Well, you should also think of your wedding this way! A strong and moving essay wouldn't make sense without a compelling closing paragraph, and so too, your wedding should not be a cliffhanger!
I know I get carried away with analogies sometimes (often), but seriously, a planned exit not only brings closure to the evening, but makes for some pretty awesome photos.
Sparklers are always a great option, but one new-ish trend are biodegradable flying chinese lanterns. (Thanks to one of my fave blogs for introducing to me this!)
One idea is for guests to write well-wishes to the couple on these--then release at end of the night. How awesome!

To be Wed: Jess + Larry

Alycia + Ernie: 07.25.09: Married

::Highlights of this wedding::

1. Ceremony seating

Alycia and Ernie were married in the gorgeous rotunda of the Carnegie--so the bride wanted to have her guests seated in a circle to complement the space instead of the typical chair layout. And the couple was married right in the middle of that circle! Having set up the black chiavari chairs for this event, I can say that creating this type of seating plan is a lot more difficult than it may look!

2. Bride's Entrance

Alycia (and her bridal party) made her entrance into the rotunda down a spiral staircase--definitely different and super elegant!

3. Black Chiavaris + Black Linens

Although slowly gaining popularity, I notice that people still tend to shy away from incorporating too much black into their weddings. But it can be timeless, classic, sexy when done right as evidenced by this wedding's use of black chiavari chairs and black pintuck linens. Think 'little black dress.'

4. Club DJ

Music was important to them, so instead of hiring a 'wedding dj' Alycia and Ernie splurged on one of their favorite local club djs to spin at their reception. And trust me....it made for a great party!

5. Sunken Hydrangea

Orchids have been done. So it was refreshing to see another flower, hydrangea, in sunken centerpieces. Striking.

Be Savvy: Choosing a Wedding Planner

~an adaptation of a really great quote, by Meg:)

I love a good quote--and I think the one above is REALLY resonant and although it may seem obvious, is something I want to remind brides to think about as at least one criterion by which they consider to whom they will entrust the planning/coordination of their weddings.

When all things are equal with planners' track records, competence, reliability--I encourage you to think about hiring a wedding professional who most closely reflects your own style sensibilities because I think this greatly increases the likelihood of your wedding or event being executed EXACTLY as you imagined it!

Anyone (I hope) can follow directions--like taking notes on where you want these candles, or how you'd like this table set-up etc.

But it takes someone with a real eye, attention to detail and sense for what you're trying to achieve overall to do it well. That's why I find it helpful when your planner shares your own style sense, really 'gets' what you'd like to achieve and can offer ideas on how to make your ideas even better.

And the leads to a planner who may be a good fit for you are often obvious. Look at photos of past weddings a planner has been involved in styling or even just their web site--the style and feel of it--to get a sense for the personality/sensibilities/taste of a person before touching bases.

Hope this helps--even if just a little bit:)

Nicole + Matt Part II: The Reception

A few weeks ago I blogged about Nicole and Matt's beach ceremony in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Well, here are some photos from their Ohio reception, back home at the Blue Heron Golf Club in Medina. For her reception, Nicole wanted to bring the sexy, island feel from her ceremony back to the states for a large reception of 200+ family and friends. As Matt and Nicole had already celebrated in Mexico, we were able to work out some fabulous decor and details for a very large reception on a limited budget.

Nicole + Matt Part I: The Ceremony

I had the pleasure of working with the fabulous Nicole since last October to plan her and hubby Matt's recent June wedding events: an intimate beach ceremony in Mexico + a sexy turquoise and orange reception and party for 200+ family and friends back at home at Medina, Ohio's Blue Heron Golf Club a few weeks after.

The couple is based in Columbus, Ohio (bride Nicole is from Akron-area), so we spent several weekends road-tripping back and forth this year meeting with vendors to plan their wedding and reception.

Nicole was great to work with--she is definitely a girl after my own heart--and I am very pleased with how all of the many details we worked on together turned out for both the ceremony and reception!

Pink can be tricky to do right. And so can bling-because it is reallly easy to either overdo or just go wrong with both!

But I am soooo okay with lots of pink, frill, and sparkle when it is executed like this! Absolutely ethereal and inspired!

I love how the designer seems to approach her arrangements and tablescapes as if she is putting together a fashion collection, complete with main pieces, accent pieces, and jewelry!

One design element that I'm starting to see more and more of is the sparklies/ beaded curtains/beaded strands. I posted a while ago about how designers are beginning to use them everywhere-- (they were mostly seen adorning chuppahs before) vases, tables, etc. See that post, plus some places to pick up sparklies, here.

Hemingway calls the below the Marilyn Monroe table!

Small beaded chandeliers are a great way to glam up any space, indoors or out.

And notice the use of sparklies here on this sweetheart table.

Taking a Good Idea and Making It Perfect: Semi-DIY Beach Programs

So a few months ago in scouring the web for cheap and chic program ideas for one of my summer brides I came across this super cute and very budget-friendly option from AWESOME Etsy shop My Blue Tulip Design:

$1.00 each!

BUT, although cute, these were a bit too 'formal looking' for my bride who is getting married (ceremony) in Riviera, Maya Mexico next weekend with a color scheme of vibrant orange and turquoise--so I asked the Etsy shop's designer, Martha (who is a dream to work with), if she could take this style and reappropriate it for us--which she did! She altered this more formal design and came up with something a bit more 'casual and free-flowing' for my bride's beach wedding. Martha created the files for us and I just got done putting together and shipping off.

Next, thanks to the CRAZY color printers we've invested in I was able to do all of her program printing and assembly myself.

All I needed was cover stock, linen paper, a hole punch, raffia and ribbon:

A Pink + Turquoise Baby Shower!

Soooo, for those who don't know, hubby and I are expecting a little girl in a few months! We had a coed baby shower/brunch this past weekend which was GREAT times and I wanted to share a few photos. We had the shower at Bravo in Woodmere, Ohio:) Enjoy!

We had three kinds of 'color coded' cupcakes: strawberry, lemon and chocolate. Also had a small cake. They were freshly baked that morning and OH so delish!

My DIY cupcake stands! I searched and searched for cute cupcake stands (not a huge fan of the basic wire kind--and not a fan of spending LOTS of $$$ on something like this...) until I had an epiphany in Dollar Tree! My cupcake stands cost $2 each to make and my pink cake platter was $1. For the cupcake stands I simply flipped over those pink containers and hot glued them to some plastic serving platters. Super sturdy and very cute.

Not Your Mother's Dyeables

Dyeable satin shoes have a come a longgggg way from what I remember them being a decade ago--or even just a few years ago. Actually, they've come a long way since just last year!

Gone are the days of the boring, characterless satin dyeable shoe (think Coloriffics (which also have come a long way!)).

Today, top designers like Kate Spade, Stu Weitzman and Giuseppe Zanotti have gotten in on the special occasions/dyeable market and have really expanded the options and upped the style for brides looking for the perfect shoe in the perfect color.

Preparing for a longgggg day. Day 1 of an Ethiopian wedding starts at around 10am and usually doesnt end till like 2am. It's almost always a whole day of activity for everyone and starts with the husband-to-be coming to pick up the bride from her parents home in the morning...

Tips to Green Your Wedding: Treading Lightly

"Going green" and "green living" are such buzz phrases right now--and there's no exception when it comes to the idea of having a 'green wedding.' So over the next few months I will periodically share tips on ways you can be thoughtful in planning your wedding or event to tread a little more lightly on the earth!
Tip #1: Local, Local, Local
Food
A great way to have huge impact is to consider your menu and the foods you will serve at the wedding. When you or your caterer uses seasonal, locally-grown foods from area farmers and producers you are accomplishing many things at once. When you serve local foods you are: supporting sustainable agriculture where fruit and veggies are grown naturally and meat is often raised without antibiotics= helathier for you; cutting down on food miles/the cost to transport food; supporting an alternative to industrial agriculture which has many negative environmental impacts.

The easisest way to go about a local menu is to seek out caterers in your area that work with local, seasonal ingredients and have partnerships with local food producers. You can find local producers in your area by visiting LocalHarvest.org or going to the USDA's local farmer's market finder here.
TIP: Northeast Ohio caterer Spice of Life is one that uses ALL regional, seasonal and sustainable ingredients in their menus. Check them out here. They even include on their web site a list of f amily farms they have partnerships with.
Wine
Same idea as food: get it locally or choose organic wine (grapes grown without chemical pesticides). Purchasing wine by the case from area vineyards is also normally a very cost-effective option.
Flowers
Instead of ordering and having flowers shipped from across or outside of the country, explore options at local farmers markets or flower markets. This will be easier in some areas of the country than others, but it's worth checking into.

If you are using a florist for your wedding, tell him or her that it is important to you to use local blooms and work with them to select flowers that are in season and available in your area. Not only is this 'green,' it will also many times save you money!

Lastly, if you want to really take it 'grassroots,' try growing your own wheatgrass centerpieces! (Takes about 7-10 days) Believe it or not, this decor option works well with many wedding styles--from casual to more formal and is a super easy (and cheap)project which requires just wheatgrass seed, containers and soil. Get creative with your containers to fit the feel of your wedding--and guests can even take these home as favors! Directions on how to grow your own wheatgrass centerpieces here.

Of course, you can forego flowers as centerpieces altogether. I'll talk about that another day!

Just as the groom too many times becomes an afterthought in the wedding planning process--so do the groom's and his guys' boutonnieres! I have sat through several meetings with florists where 20 minutes is spent considering the bridal bouquet and bridesmaid's bouquets--only to be followed by a 30-second affirmative decision on bouts {typically something like this}.

FLORIST: "We'll give the guys something to complement. Let's go with single white roses with a black wrap. And we'll add some greenery to the groom's to make his a bit different."

And just like that dies the possibility of really cool/thoughtful/unique boutonnieres!

Northeast Ohio Brides: Event Venue: Blue Heron Golf Club

Last month, I had a chance to visit a venue where one of my summer brides is holding her wedding reception. She is having a destination wedding ceremony in Riviera Maya, Mexico and I'm working with her to bring that tropical vibe back to Northeast Ohio for a larger celebration with family and friends. Challenging? Maybe a little--if we were working with a hotel ballroom or typical banquet space. But Blue Heron's look, feel and layout will be a perfect canvas for my bride's vibrant and chic soiree!

Check out a few photos I snapped of the space last month. Keep in mind, these were taken in the dead of winter in Cleveland.... imagine how gorgeous this would be outside in June:)

First, two fab outdoor patio spaces to work with. The upstairs patio at Blue Heron, in particular, would be great as a ceremony space for brides.

The main ballroom at Blue Heron is super elegant by day--tall ceilings and chandeliers. But we have plans to transform the space with a few elements sure to set the mood. I love the floor to ceiling windows in this room and how neutral it is...

We were here on December 26th, I think, hence the Christmas deco!

Be Savvy: "Details Please!": On Floral Proposals...

The writer of one of the wedding blogs I love to follow, destination planner Kelly McWilliams (Weddings by Socialites), has a recent (very useful) blog post on the importance of detailed floral proposals which really got me thinking.

In her post, she discusses why thorough proposals from your florist are essential so that there are NO surprises on your wedding day and so you know exactly what you're getting--down to the kind of ribbon and wrap for bouquets and even what type of alternate flowers may be used in the case a promised flower is not available.

But another really great reason to request such detailed proposals is to know exactly what you are paying for--and to be able to decide if there are things in the proposal you may forgo, do cheaper or that your wedding planner can do for you. This is where a wedding planner can really help out!

One of the things I do as a planner is review all of the contracts--and proposals--that my brides and grooms receive from vendors. I look at them for any gaps, unanswered questions or red flags....

But it's also REALLY important for me to be able to see where I may help my couples save money! And to be sure we stay within budget. Normally, there will be things I can flag in a floral proposal that are not necessary or that we can downgrade or negotiate for budget purposes. And because I talk to and deal with vendors often, I can immediately see when something may be done in a more budget-friendly manner.

The best floral proposals are those that go into detail about each aspect of the floral--i.e. personal flowers, ceremony and reception flowers, cake table flowers etc.--AND that include itemized pricing for each piece--e.g. 6 boutonnieres at $7 each to be made of X-type of blooms in Y-color and to be wrapped in Z-kind of ribbon...)

Hopefully this is helpful in terms of figuring out your floral and in seeing one way in which a wedding consultant may help save you money!

Northeast Ohio Brides: Event Location: ThornCreek Winery & Gardens

I came across this Aurora winery recently while scouting out locations for a spring baby shower--but I think it looks perfect for a bridal shower, rehearsal dinner/mixer--or even a small, intimate wedding! Apparently, the winery--which is touted as "part living room, part French chalet, part art gallery"--was purchased and renovated in 2005 and now is being marketed for special events. Food-wise they offer tapas and desserts. And of course there's the wine.

A few of the brides I am working with are considering adding hanging crystal strands to centerpieces to 'glam up' their decor. (Example of one bride's popular DIY crystal escort card tree pictured below).

Lately, it seems that brides have been paying more attention to the dresses they choose for their bridesmaids--considering things like cost, and whether or not the dress could be worn again. New lines of party dresses like those at J.Crew, Ann Taylor and Threads that are targeted at the idea of "modern maids" is making this easier....as is the common sense idea to simply choose a bridesmaid's dress off the rack!

So I love to see this same consideration given to mothers of the brides! Nordstrom.com has a 'Mother of the Bride" section in their dress shop with about 300 dresses--many very reasonably priced, too. Just a heads up to take a look!

Yes...this is a wedding blog....but it is also titled "Savvy!" Therefore, every now and then you will see me post tips to savvy-up your life. I thought this list would be fitting for this Thanksgiving and the upcoming holiday season. Let us all challenge ourselves to tread as lightly as possible on the earth this season, shall we?

10 Tips to "Green" Your Thanksgiving and Holiday Season
Practical advice to make your holiday festive and green

1. When you buy organic you are ensuring the food on your table was grown without toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and antibiotics. When choosing a turkey, look for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) organic seal. It guarantees that a turkey was not fed antibiotics, which helps ensure those same drugs still work for humans. Also look for organic apples, celery, potatoes and green beans because these holiday favorites are among the fruits and vegetables that typically carry the highest pesticide residues.

2. Buy locally grown produce and meats from local farmer's markets. Food travels an average of 1,500 miles or more by train or truck from the farm to the supermarket. Trains and trucks emit air pollutants and heat-trapping carbon dioxide. Regionally grown meat and produce not only travel a shorter distance to your table and arrive fresher, but they may also come from mid-sized, pasture operations that often follow more environmentally friendly practices. To find local farmers and farmers markets near you, go to http://www.eatwellguide.org/.

3. Search for more genetically diverse meats and produce. Today's large-scale farms unfortunately focus on only a select few varieties of livestock and crops. For example, of the more than 250 million turkeys sold in the United States each year, 99 percent are the Broad-Breasted White variety. Many chefs and consumers, however, are finding that more unusual varieties, such as American Bronze turkeys, taste a lot better. Likewise, heirloom fingerling potatoes generally taste better than russet potatoes. Choosing such "heritage" varieties promotes biodiversity and ensures a reliable food supply for future generations.

4. Consider a meatless main dish. With the price of food substantially higher than last year, you can save money on groceries by skipping or reducing the amount of meat, often the heftiest part of the bill. By going vegetarian, you also will be helping the planet. Meat production generally depletes environmental resources more than other food production.

5. When entertaining, skip paper invitations and either call or send an email invitation to your guests. If printed invitations are a must, save paper by sending the information on a postcard or folded sheet of paper instead of in an envelope. For dinner, use reusable, washable dinnerware instead of disposable paper plates and cups.

6. Encourage guests to carpool or take public transportation to Thanksgiving festivities. If you have guests flying in for the holiday, suggest arrival times so you can reduce the number of trips you have to make to the airport. Urge them to take a direct flight, which uses less fuel than trips with two or three layovers. Better yet, tell them to take a motor coach or a train instead of flying.

7. Once the Thanksgiving celebration is over and the decorations come out, consider switching to energy efficient lighting for trees and outdoor displays to save money and protect the environment. Traditional holiday lights generate as much global warming pollution as about 250,000 cars annually, according to UCS research. So opt for LED (light-emitting diode) holiday lights, which use semiconductor technology to convert electricity into light directly, resulting in significant energy savings.

8. Get crafty with holiday decorations. Make your windows or dinner table more festive by creating decorations from recycled wrapping and tissue paper (For instructions, go to: www.marthastewart.com/article/pom-poms-and-luminarias). For a whimsical table centerpiece, try growing your own wheatgrass in a shallow container (For instructions, go to: http://www.gardenguides.com/how-to/tipstechniques/herbs/wheatgrass.asp). A vase with a display of organic flowers or interesting rocks is another low-budget, earth-friendly centerpiece idea. Instead of traditional Christmas wreaths, opt for an organic one made of mossy twigs, leaves, grasses or lavender.

9. Challenge yourself this year to purchase products made from organic or recycled materials wrapped in minimal, recyclable packaging. Look for gifts that are long-lasting and durable or that can be given to someone else when the recipient has finished using it.

10. Buy the most efficient electronic gadgets. Electronics with the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star label use significantly less energy than conventional models. Energy Star-rated power adapters and battery chargers also are available. Also look for models that come with a rechargeable battery. If the gadget on your shopping list comes only with conventional alkaline batteries, replace them with rechargeable batteries and include a battery charger with the gift.

Gabbi & Red's Rachael Ray Wedding!!

Today I am super excited to introduce you to Gabbi and Red. Gabbi was one of many brides who had her wedding plans come to a halt when her Houston, Texas venue ended up shutting down without warning in mid-September after filing bankruptcy.

Well, she got the wedding of her dreams last month as one of about 30 couples who married at a 'mass' wedding thrown in Houston by Rachael Ray. Here is Gabbi's story....and some gorgeous photos from her day!

It Started With An Email...

"After the bankruptcy disaster, several couples decided to ban together, finding each other on different websites & starting a distribution list to keep each other in the know. Later, someone organized it into a Yahoo group so we could just sign in when we wanted to get messages. In the meantime the Rachael Ray Show was doing research on Hurricane Ike victims and came across our story, and somehow, our group e-mail address. I responded to the e-mail and a producer called to get our story. Ironically, that was 10/17, and when she asked when our wedding was I said, “It was supposed to be tomorrow.” We told our story several times to 2 other producers over the next few days. They kept saying they were just “gathering research,” determining if this could be a story and were organizing a town-hall meeting on Sunday for all the couples to meet. Red & I said we’d make the drive. They called Wednesday afternoon & asked if we could come to Houston the next morning to interview. On top of everything we’d already lost, we didn’t mind adding 2 days of leave & gas money if it meant getting the word out to others. So my good friend let us stay & film at his place so we packed up & headed to Houston late Wednesday night & filmed the entire next day. The most we thought was that our input may be featured on a story about wedding disasters. Little did we know…"

Rachael Ray to the Rescue

"Turns out the RR crew had the plans in motion before they even began calling us. The offer: 1 group wedding at Minute Maid Park - in 7 days!! We could invite 10 guests & the dresses, tuxes, rings, food, photography, etc. would all be handled by the show. All of this with a guarantee that the wedding would be “bigger & better” than anything we we could’ve imagined. Our 10 ppl covered our immediate family & although we were worried about “television” controlling all of it, we accepted the gift & got our marriage license the next day!"

Wedding Week

"We raced back to Dallas right after the town-hall meeting on Sunday night – we had to be at work the next morning! We invited our 10 ppl & told just a few other friends what was going on. Even if we’d wanted to tell more, we didn’t have the time or energy. I declined the free David’s Bridal dress since I already had mine ready to go & was able to get my hair twisted & nails/toes done. Red got fitted for his tux, but we were sooo behind @ work, we couldn’t take off any more time. We couldn’t leave for Houston until Saturday morning – 1 day before wedding day. To add to the stress, the show kept trying to get us to come on Friday to do some filming, but we just couldn’t. So on Thursday afternoon, they told us one of their cameramen was on a flight to Dallas to film us here!! They taped me leaving work, Red getting his hair cut, me w/ 2 of my local BM’s helping me pack – they didn’t leave until after 9 that night. Then they filmed us in Houston on Saturday morning – Red picking out a wedding gift for me & Greta bringing me a collection of Stuart Weitzmans so I could have the perfect “Cinderella” shoes. After all of that trouble, they didn’t use any of that footage in the show, but I had to wear…and got to keep…the shoes."

The Big Day

"My sister & I had a great breakfast after a good night’s sleep & headed to Minute Maid Park. My hair was freshly untwisted & the Toni & Guy staff did a great job of securing my feather & making my hair just a lil’ more funky…at least before the humidity killed it. On to the Sephora booth for make-up - they did just a good job as well...and I wore false eyelashes for the 1st time!

My sister, the 1 person I was allowed to have with me, was a Godsend and helped me get dressed. The final touch was a microphone cleverly placed under my dress, and the frustrating countdown began! Ugghhh!! We had to be dressed at 4:30, but didn’t walk down the aisle until 6:15. The nearly 2 hours in between was spent walking from holding area to holding area and waiting…and waiting."

Here we go!

"Finally, we’re right behind the curtains; our escorts meet us (it was my dad’s first time wearing a tuxedo – he was so handsome ) & we hear a thunderous cheer – they grooms had just come out! Then it was our turn… the walk down the aisle was our first time seeing everything, and it was breathtaking. They announced the names of brides, their escorts, & their grooms and then APPLAUSE / SCREAMS / WHISTLES!!! That’s right – each table cheered for their couple – it was so crazy, but wonderful! It reminded me of graduation!! I’m so happy the show allowed / encouraged that because it was just amazing - as if we’d overcome something to get to this big day…and in a way, we had. Each couple had the spotlight in their walk to their place. There was a brief, sentimental reading, then we said group vows & did a group ring exchange before we were pronounced husband & wife. FINALLY!!!"

The Ending

"The food was wonderful; the cake was yummy; & the DJ did a good job of playing a mix of music. There were several photographers there & each was assigned to 3 couples. Our time slot was right when dinner began so we hurried through a lot of formal pics then grabbed her later in the evening for more of just us. The night ended with a fireworks display & some pretty awesome prizes – including an all-expense paid 4-day honeymoon to the Riviera Maya!

The sheer generosity of Rachael Ray still amazes us. The wedding had no gimmicks, no publicity stunts; no hidden agendas. It was an absolutely wonderful & beautiful occasion that was still personal for each couple. If you watched the show, you’ll see I broke down crying when I called my mom to tell her what was happening. I’m not sure why, but they edited that to a different part of her conversation. What she said to bring on the waterworks was, “See, it pays to be a good, kind person b/c God puts wonderful people in your life to be the same to you...and you two deserve that.”

The Rachael Ray Wedding!

You may have heard about this--the Houston couples who were planning weddings at local venues that ended up shutting down without warning in mid-September after filing bankruptcy. The whole situation was terrible and many brides lost thousands of dollars--but more importantly were left with wedding plans in shambles. Thankfully, there was an outpouring of love from wedding vendors across the country--many offering their services for free. And then there was FOOD Network star Rachel Ray who hosted a gorgeous mass wedding for more than 30 of the affected couples.

COUPLES GET WEDDINGS OF THEIR DREAMS
If you weren’t on the guest list for the fairy-tale wedding that Rachael Ray hosted for 33 Houston couples at Minute Maid Park earlier this month, don’t despair.

The ceremony was televised and will be featured Friday on Ray’s syndicated cooking show.

“I had a pretty great wedding,” Ray gushed this week by phone. “But that wedding (in Houston) was the best one I’ve ever been to. It was really overwhelming. It was kind of beyond words.”

The Houston couples never intended for a mass wedding. All had planned to celebrate their nuptials at either Bella Terraza near the Galleria or the Tuscany in Garden Oaks. But those plans died when the venues shut down without warning in mid-September. Parent company Titus Inc. filed for bankruptcy Oct. 8, according to the Better Business Bureau, which has received 150 complaints to date.

Many of the brides lost thousands of dollars in deposits; one woman had paid part of hers with life insurance money from her mother’s 2005 death from pancreatic cancer. Several interviewed by the Chronicle reported they had been offered discounts for paying in advance and in full.

Neither the company owners nor their attorney responded to requests for comment.

“It was a tragic, awful story,” Ray said. “We tried to replace a bad experience with a really beautiful memory.”

I love color. And I love seeing vibrant color in weddings--especially destination weddings. So occasionally you will see me feature amazing weddings with amazingly gorgeous colors here at Savvy. I typically don't like to 're-blog'/ or blog things that I have seen blogged elsewhere on the internet. Buttttt.....some things are just re-blog-worthy!

Today's wedding with colors that pop comes from Sun Gold Photography and took place at the Rock House Hotel in Jamaica.
What stood out to me here were the bridesmaids' dresses and flowers. And the racy trash the dress session was equally cool!
The BEST thing about these hot colors is that they are the colors of one of my summer brides who is doing a destination ceremony and reception at home in Ohio. Look forward to hers being fab!

Similar to Like.com, Shop Style is exactly what its name suggests: it allows you to easily shop for the exact style of whatever you are looking for. It is a visual search and I love it because it searches SO MANY different web stores--ones I have never heard of before that have the cutest items!

[I had a chance to scout this awesome venue last weekend. It is RIGHT on the water and next door to the most charming Bed and Breakfast ever! There is SO much to be done with this space, which is a mix of a contemporary/loft feel and a vintage/grand feel. Hard to explain. Although it looks really contemporary/loft-like from the exterior, the inside has LOTS of character and is far from a 'blank slate." There are murals painted on the walls and lots of gorgeous dark wood detailing--no steel beams, etc. And I love the outdoor courtyard space!

Big Lots Goes Online

Big Lots is just ONE of those hit or miss stores--that when you HIT it is always for something fabulous and fabulously discounted. This morning, the retailer opened online shopping. Of particular interest are the Candles and Floral Decor section and the Indoor and Outdoor decor.

Now, of course, right now everything is all Halloween-ey and Christmas-ey, but I would keep my eyes on this one as they add inventory. Another one to watch is Dollar Tree Direct which has a fairly new online presence, sells in bulk and will ship your order for free to your local store.

Is moving from its K Street location to M Street at the Shops at Georgetown Park. They are having a GREAT closing sale on K Street right now, too! I just stopped in on my lunch hour looking for some pretty lace for a bride's bouquet and everything was 30 percent off! This store is FABULOUS compared to your run of the mill fabric stores and their selection of ribbon, trims, imported lace and bridal fabrics are unmatched by any shop I've visited outside of the New York City garment district. My continued posting of Forever 21 pumps, but my recent trip to the three-level mega Forever in NYC (around 34th shopping district) has me a believer that the store's shoes are...ok! Certainly for a one-time wear (think your wedding). I even tried on a few pairs of heels while there and they were....kind of...comfy! Not bad at all for the price! Before visiting the NYC store which has its own 'shoe section' I was like most of us--used to seeing a few random shoes here and there placed around the stores. Hard to take seriously.

DIY Damask Votive Wraps

So, there has been a lot of talk lately about ways to add flair to ordinary glass votives--especially with this year's growing popularity of the damask print. Some ideas I think are very clever are wrapping damask-print packing tape around votives or finding a pattern you love, printing it on vellum then attaching to clear votives with double stick tape. I think it would be SUPER interesting to try the tape or printed vellum on tinted, jewel-toned votives in a mustard, purple or crimson!!

I came across this August DIY wedding of a Vancouver, Canada couple on Flickr and was SO inspired by all of the thought put into it...and of course, the colors--aqua and red--which is one of my fave color duos right now!

The bride and groom apparently met on the campus of the University of British Columbia, and their entire wedding "theme" is centered around school and class. I know...sounds REALLY cheesy! But they pulled it off so well. Enjoy:)

I am SO proud and excited to introduce to you Savvy- the new wedding and event designand planning boutique that will be taking up a lot of my time from here on out!

A few months ago, I resolved that I had to find a way to use my professional skills in a way that was more fulfilling; that would be completely satisfying to me; and that would allow me to channel my creativity, research, planning, communication skills (everything I use in my career by day).

So, Savvy is what was born of that necessity to expand and take on something perfect for me:)

In addition to the planning and event design services I'll be offering, I will still be blogging! Savvy Blog will be very similar to what I did for over a year at My Cleveland Wedding and I will eventually absorb the more than 200 posts and useful wedding planning tips, ideas and inspiration from that blog into Savvy blog!

Is Beautiful Created Equal?

From the New York Times:
Apparently the July issue of Italian Vogue will use only women of color throughout the magazine to call attention to prejudice. Read the article "Conspicuous By Their Presence" HERE.

Needless to say, I think this is great. Growing up, I didn't see an abundance of positive and beautiful images of women of color in media, especially African American women. Even in the toy stores, it was hard to find black barbies and dolls with dark skin. I know this may sound trivial, but I think that had to have at least some impact on my perception of beauty growing up. Even today, I can say that as a mommy of a toddler, sometimes I struggle to find dolls for my daughter with brown skin. **Sigh**

In many fashion magazines, you will see the 'token' black woman or black guy--as if they were included just to be politically correct and that is incredibly frustrating. So to have the disparity acknowledged, albeit not, of course, in the American Vogue...is encouraging.

I do not want my daughter to grow up under the impression that she is a second-class citizen; that somehow her beauty, her skin are 'less-than.' It is time to break down the barriers, the lies that have been promulgated throughout American history about what "black" is.

I want my daughter to grow up and be able to see images of African American women in the media that reinforce what I tell her everyday: "You are beautiful! You are perfect! Black is beautiful!"

Rehearsal Mixer Papyrus!

Now that invites are out and RSVPS are rolling in, I am beginning to think about our rehearsal mixer/ meet-and-greet and what the invites for that will look like. I have decided (I think)that would like to make this another DIY project--especially as I have a lot of damask-print scrapbook paper left over from my bellybands.

Like I've talked about before, we're having a rehearsal mixer for our bridal party and out of town guests the evening before the wedding at a dowtown Cleveland wine bar.
